Since I started university, way back when, I wanted to work in magazines. Working with not only words but pictures and design elements to produce something beautiful that readers would enjoy really appealed to me. And I have been very fortunate to be able to do for a living what I set out to do. Working in magazine publishing also opened up a wealth of subject matter to me – from human interest stories and in-depth interviews to beauty, fashion, health, living, parenting, books, careers, business, arts and culture, I have worked with it all, and have enjoyed every minute.
From the very beginning of my experience in the publishing industry, over 20 years ago, I realised my number one skill was my eagle eye. I have a sharp ability to spot errors and pick up on inconsistencies, and can note a misplaced comma from a mile off.
Having worked in contract publishing for over five years, I also have a great deal of experience working with clients from a range of industries, and know how to turn a client’s copy or brief into something enticing for the target audience.
In a time when machines are doing more and more of our work for us, people are time-poor and budgets are cut, it’s very easy for errors to build up and become the norm. However, to the reader, an error looks sloppy and unprofessional. And confusing text makes it very difficult for a reader to absorb the intended message.
That’s where I can help. If you’d like to discuss a project in need of editorial expertise, please get in touch.
